I shoot more digital work than anything and have for the last 5 or 6 years. Film has become so cost-prohibitive that I simply can't afford to shoot as much as I would like to for that reason alone. My portfolio however, doesn't contain any obvious digital manipulations (I've always felt that the less you notice I've done to the photograph, the better) and that seems to bring people to the conclusion that I'm anti-manipulation. Well that's simply not true. I appreciate anything that is done WELL. I aspire to achieve the same. The fact that I don't have anything like that in my portfolio is more that I feel unsure of my expertise, my "vision" for any kind of complicated theme and know that I have a particular aesthetic that I wish to achieve and will not half ass it if I can't make it look phenomenal. So, I decided to challenge myself with a manipulation image and constructed a plan to build a face-mold mask for Kelley and one light photograph her with a texture combination that I could really "marry" with the image. An artist uses that tool to create. Art can be created with ANY tool. An artist with many tools available may have more options open to them for that creation process and can diversify their visions, but they are by no means tied to those tools. It's part of why I tend to over-explain myself and/or make people feel like I'm talking down to them about something... Over-explaining in detail is how I learn to understand things. In other words, teaching. Not preaching or complaining or belittling, but teaching. As the teacher, I also learn a great deal about my subject.<br /><br />Thusly, and with the initial idea and push to try it driven by Kelley, I am beginning a new series of posts for this blog in addition to my daily photo (I know I've slacked recently). A weekly lesson. More like a thought, really. Or a technique... a pondering... an assignment... A call to action. Once a week I'll post some kind of commentary on the art of photography that is meant to be thought of as a beginner to intermediate class in the craft. It's mostly to help me, but I hope that it is a benefit in some way to those that choose to read it as well. Had a lot to do... only got a little done. BUT!! I did get to see the fruits of my agonizing labor from my last shoot with Kelley in January. She sends me a link to a digital infrared color photo one day asking what it is... I explain the whole infrared thing and how black and white infrared film is like no other, yada yada and my brain snaps and says "Yoooooouuuuu have to shoot infrared film". "By candlelight!" The voices in my head tell me to do much stranger shit than kill people, as you can clearly see. So, I go off and blow a wad of cash and nearly break myself in half building this giant contraption in time to do this shoot. It's ten tiers high and holds 30 tea or votive candles per shelf for a total of 300. (see below) This turned out to be BARELY enough light to do what I wanted.
