Photography 101

Well, I guess it's time to try my hand at this thing finally...

I think the most important thing to understand about the art of photography is the same with any medium... it's that an artist creates what they can with the tools they have. It's not the camera that is important, but rather the hand that wields it. This is not to say that equipment serves no purpose, because that is NOT true. Equipment is a tool. An artist uses that tool to create. Art can be created with ANY tool. An artist with many tools available may have more options open to them for that creation process and can diversify their visions, but they are by no means tied to those tools. Here is your project, should you choose to accept it:

Go to Target, Walgreen's, Wally world, or any place of this nature and pick yourself up a disposable FILM camera with 24-36 shots on the roll. Find yourself a subject with sufficient light and go to town. Develop that roll and peruse the results. Have fun :)

Daily Photos

I didn't shoot anything today (EVEN THOUGH IT SNOWED!!! GAH!) and I haven't been around so much for a few days, but I was going through some kid photos from last year and found this one that seem to have forgotten about... so it's my photo of the day, belated.

A new approach...

I've always found that teaching helps me learn what I'm teaching exponentially faster than just doing the same thing over and over. It's part of why I tend to over-explain myself and/or make people feel like I'm talking down to them about something... Over-explaining in detail is how I learn to understand things. In other words, teaching. Not preaching or complaining or belittling, but teaching. As the teacher, I also learn a great deal about my subject.

Thusly, and with the initial idea and push to try it driven by Kelley, I am beginning a new series of posts for this blog in addition to my daily photo (I know I've slacked recently). A weekly lesson. More like a thought, really. Or a technique... a pondering... an assignment... A call to action. Once a week I'll post some kind of commentary on the art of photography that is meant to be thought of as a beginner to intermediate class in the craft. It's mostly to help me, but I hope that it is a benefit in some way to those that choose to read it as well. First post will be this weekend.

One of the many things that function in my house on a daily basis to give me a comfortable existence, all provided by a wonderful woman with a beautiful soul. Thank you for everything Kelley.
